Bramblewood's Journey So Far

Published on April 30, 2026 at 9:57 p.m.

When we first sat down in early 2025, Bramblewood Co-operative Homes didn't have a name, a logo, or a corporate seal. It was just a group of us sitting around a table, sharing a deep, collective frustration with the housing market in Hamilton, and asking a simple question: What if we built a third way?

We didn't want to participate in the speculative, profit-driven rental market anymore, but we were also locked out of traditional homeownership. We wanted permanent housing security, a tight-knit neighborhood to raise families in, and a footprint that actively heals the local environment rather than harming it.

So, we decided to build it ourselves.

In August 2025, we officially incorporated as a non-profit housing co-operative. But as any of us on the board will tell you, incorporation is just the legal paperwork—the real work happens in the trenches. If you’ve been wondering what we’ve been up to behind the scenes over the last year, the answer is: a lot.

Because a co-op is a democratic community, it needs a strong backbone. We have spent countless hours drafting our initial organizational and occupational by-laws. We’re building a framework from scratch that ensures every future member has an equal voice, a safe environment, and a clear understanding of our shared responsibilities.

We haven’t been doing this in a vacuum, either. We’ve been in regular communication with the Co-operative Housing Federation (CHF) of Canada and regional CHFs, tap-dancing our way through their incredible resources to make sure our governance is rock-solid from day one.

We are the first to admit that we aren't multi-million-dollar developers—we are community members. That’s why we’ve spent the last several months taking meetings with local Hamilton developers, seasoned project managers, and city planning professionals. We’ve been learning the ins and outs of zoning, land acquisition, and municipal development applications so we can navigate City Hall smoothly when the time comes.

Because our vision is deeply rooted in regenerative design, we’ve also been meeting with sustainable architecture firms. We are looking at building high-performance, net-positive townhouses that don't just aim for carbon neutrality, but actively give back to the Earth through eco-friendly materials and integrated community food forests.

So...what's next?

We are officially in Phase 1. Our immediate goal is to get our professional "Class B" cost estimates so we can prove this project's viability on paper to federal grant providers.

To do that, we need our community. Over the next few weeks, you’re going to see our website go live, our donation portals open, and our Early Membership Info Session launch. We are looking for our early members—the families, individuals, and neighbours who want to lock in their spot in this dream co-op and help us fund the initial engineering milestones.

Thank you for believing in Bramblewood, for cheering us on in the streets of Hamilton, and for sharing the vision. We’re building this brick by brick, meeting by meeting, and we are so glad you're here for the story.

Until the next update,

The Bramblewood Founding Team
